The creator and DJ on her early-2000s influences, the art of reading a room, and a confidence that got its own name.

Few creators have shaped online style in recent years quite like Tara Yummy. Over years of documenting her life on YouTube, she has built an audience drawn as much to her candor as to her aesthetic: a wardrobe rooted in the early 2000s, a signature makeup look, and an ease in front of the camera that feels increasingly rare. Along the way, her name became a phrase of its own. "Tara Yummy is a mindset" now circulates online as a shorthand for self-assurance.
More recently, that sensibility has moved beyond the screen. After a trip to Coachella prompted her to stop waiting on an ambition she had long held, Tara began DJing, and her debut set carried the name her fans had already given her: the Tara Yummy Mindset.
We met Tara in New York to discuss how her style took shape, the beauty ritual she never skips, the difference between curating a set and curating a video, and what it takes to stay authentic online.
Ava: Can you walk me through what you’re wearing today?
Tara: My jorts are Jaded London, my flats are Dream Pairs, my bag is Balenciaga and my phone case is, of course, Wildflower.
Ava: How did you land on your signature style, and what are your main sources of inspiration right now?
Tara: I’ve always woken up and dressed the way I wanted to. It’s never really a thought for me. My inspirations will always be anything from the early 2000s with a hint of what’s trendy in the moment.
Ava: You’re famous for your signature makeup look—what’s one beauty or styling step you refuse to skip, even if you’re just running a quick errand?
Tara: You would think the step I don’t skip would be my eyeliner but if I decide to wear no makeup, the one step I can’t skip is actually lip liner.
Ava: Your style is heavily influenced by the 2000s. What are your favorite Y2K trends?
Tara: My favorite y2k trends are always changing, but I fear I’ll never not be seen in anything but a low waist.
Fashion moves in the street before it moves online, and we're there to document it. Our team has boots on the ground in the coolest places around the world, tracking what people are actually wearing. Real people, real outfits. That's what makes OOTD.com the go-to source for outfit inspiration.
Ava: How do you approach curating a DJ set for different crowds or occasions compared to curating your videos?
Tara: I try and tap into the audience I’m about to play for while still maintaining my own music taste. In comparison to my videos, they typically are just what I want to film that day.
Ava: What’s an element of your everyday life or personal taste that rarely makes it onto camera, but heavily influences your style?
Tara: This is a hard one because I feel like I’m very open with my audience. Whether or not my week is terrible or amazing, I always make sure to let them know.
Ava: A lot of people struggle with the fear of being perceived online. How do you tune out what the internet expects and stay focused on what you actually like?
Tara: It’s become easier with time. I have great friends around me as a reminder of who I really am
Ava: The "Tara Yummy Mindset" blew up as a trend centered around unapologetic confidence. How do you tap into that mindset on days when you aren't feeling 100%?
Tara: Any day I don’t feel 100% I make sure by the end of the day I do feel a 100% and I don’t go to bed with the intention of waking up the next morning anyway BUT 100%
Ava: What’s your best advice for someone trying to show up authentically online and get past that initial fear of being judged?
Tara: You just HAVE to not care. If you let outside opinions in, then you aren’t being authentically true to yourself.
What Tara describes is less a formula than a practice: dressing for herself, staying close to the people who know her, and refusing to let outside opinion set the terms. It is a mindset her audience gave a name to, and one she continues to live out every day.
